a very accurate description. You can actually hear them gradually thru '76 build up to the confidence level it took to play such precise shows in '77.

It was ground work, in a way. One thing '76 does have over '77 is that the set lists were more diverse and exploratory.

I think they took what worked from '76 (Help>Slip>Frank; Let it Grow; some testing of the early LL>Supplications) ....discarded some things that didn't, and used 1977 to really nail some of the aforementioned tunes. More rigid set lists, but played "just about perfect" at nearly every '77 show.

'76 is a great way to see the origins and evolution, if you will, of how they got there.
